There is one big reason to purchase the *50 Tomtom range, over any other Tomtom or sat nav, and that's it's HD Traffic service.
HD traffic gives coverage of almost all roads, as opposed to just trunk roads and motorways supported by other traffic systems. Whilst not perfect I have found the more detailed traffic info useful, and it is the best traffic management on the market today without a doubt. However, if you are thinking of upgrading from your *40 Tomtom then, although the new version of software is better, it's not a huge leap and may not justify the expense.
HD traffic is a subscription service, and although press releases for this *50 range mentioned the option of free TMC traffic, mine certainly didn't have this facility. Annoyingly, my 550 also doesn't have an auto-dimming display, although it does have auto night mode. Maybe a software update will remedy.
In my experience Tomtom easily beats the competiton, and if you don't mind paying for HD traffic then it's a great product.

I am really impressed with the product, I have had Sat Nav systems before as built in but not a Tomtom. The range of facilities, screen size, legibility in most conditions is all very good. It is quite robust, it has been dropped it a couple of times and it still works well and after 2 months use it has never given me wrong directions. I particularly like the live update - it has already saved me several hours in queues at accidents and excellent re-routing capabilities with accurate time saving predictions - just brilliant.
Worthy successor

I bought this to replace a TomTom 1XL which I've had for a while. It's a big improvement over my old TomTom. The processor and software responds a lot faster and is more intelligent. The bluetooth is more comprehensive, voice control is impressive and a very good feature. I can certainly recommend it to anyone needing a satnav.
The only advice I'd give is that you go online, download and print out the full manual. This explains how to use it's features, the enclosed multi lingual manual is only a brief skim through.

Bought this for my sons birthday ,we went to ikea in warrington it told us about delay and gave another route and the extra time it would take i only bought this model for the bluetooth answering phone for when he was driving to bristol so he could tell me where he was and was ok parent do worry about their children even if they are 25 but this is 1 big leap forward if you need a sat nav your want this one its mind blowing oh and great service from amazon 2 day delivery
Top Nat Sav

...... i dont review many items so you should feel privileged Ive written this........ but its a top product. Its internal sim card along with HD traffic, IQ routes, saying street names etc makes this one of the best nat savs around. It even found a signal whilst i was inside my front room. Top product along with the ability to download the latest maps (which is easy by the way) made me feel i spent my money wisely.
